NEW AUTHORITY TRUCK INSURANCE
Getting your MC authority? Start the insurance conversation before you need it.
New authorities have no operating history, which means fewer markets and higher first-year premiums. Timing your filing and getting the right coverage from day one changes what your first year actually costs.

THE SHORT ANSWER
How does insurance work for a new trucking authority?
You can apply for your MC authority before purchasing truck insurance. While your authority is pending, you can shop for coverage and prepare your operation. When you're ready to activate the authority, your insurance company files proof of liability coverage with FMCSA. New authorities generally have fewer insurance markets because they don't yet have operating or insurance history, which is one reason first-year pricing can be higher.
TYPICAL FIRST-YEAR PREMIUM
$18,000 - $35,000+
per truck per year
Based on examples from new authority accounts I've worked on. Actual pricing varies substantially by driver, state, radius, equipment, cargo, and insurer.
THE BASIC TIMELINE
When should you buy insurance for a new MC authority?
Here's how insurance fits into the authority process:
1
2
3
4
5
Apply for authority
Submit your MOTUS / FMCSA application and pay the fees. You do not need insurance to submit the application.
File BOC-3
Designate a process agent. This is required before activation.
Shop for insurance
Compare options while your authority is pending. This gives you time to get the best coverage and pricing.
Bind coverage
Once you're ready to activate, your policy is bound and your insurer files proof of insurance with MOTUS / FMCSA.
Authority Active
FMCSA / MOTUS shows you as active after the insurance filing is processed. You can now operate legally.
UNDERWRITING
What determines the cost of new authority truck insurance?
Different insurance companies can look at the same operation differently. These are the biggest factors underwriters consider:
Driver experience
Truck & trailer
Coverage requirements
Motor Vehicle Report (MVR)
States traveled
Number of power units
Cargo hauled
Operating radius
Type of operation (Amazon Relay, moving, freight)
