What is cost per mile (CPM) in trucking?

Cost per mile is your total operating cost — fixed and variable — divided by the miles you drove in the same period. It tells you what it actually costs to put a mile on your truck, before profit.

What's the difference between fixed and variable costs?

Fixed costs stay roughly the same whether you drive 500 miles or 5,000 — insurance, truck payment, permits, ELD/dispatch fees. Variable costs scale with miles driven — fuel, maintenance, tires, tolls, driver pay. Splitting them shows which costs you can control by driving more efficiently versus which you're stuck paying regardless.

Why do I need to pick a time period (weekly, monthly, etc.)?

Costs and miles have to match the same period or your CPM will be wrong. Mixing a monthly insurance bill with one week's miles will inflate your cost per mile several times over.

What is RPM (rate per mile) and how is it different from CPM?

RPM is what you're paid per mile. CPM is what it costs you per mile. The gap between the two is your profit per mile — if RPM is lower than CPM, you're losing money on every mile even if the load pays well on paper.

How is profit margin calculated?

Profit margin is (RPM − CPM) ÷ RPM, shown as a percentage. It tells you what share of your revenue is actually profit after covering all costs.

Why does insurance show up as a fixed cost here?

Your premium is due on the same schedule regardless of how many miles you run that period, so it behaves like a fixed cost in this calculator. But insurance isn't truly fixed long-term — your coverage, deductibles, and carrier choice directly affect this number, and the cheapest premium isn't always the cheapest cost per mile if it leaves gaps that cost you later.

Should I include my own pay (owner-operator take-home) as a cost?

If you're an owner-operator, this calculator treats "driver pay" as what you'd pay someone else to drive — leave it blank or at $0 if you're taking home whatever's left after costs. If you run a fleet with a hired driver, include their pay as a variable cost.

How often should I recalculate my CPM?

Accepted Answer

Recalculate whenever a major cost changes — new insurance renewal, fuel price swings, new truck payment — and at least quarterly otherwise. Rates and costs both drift, and a CPM from six months ago won't reflect today's break-even point.

Does this calculator replace an insurance quote?

Accepted Answer

No. It's meant to help you understand your cost structure so you can evaluate quotes in context — for an actual quote, talk to a broker who can shop your risk across multiple carriers.
